Iqra School has a well-structured and engaging ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) programme catering to students from Year 1 to Year 8.  We prioritize the following:

1. Individualized Learning Plans
Each student is unique, so it's essential to tailor lessons to their language proficiency level, interests, and cultural background. Initial assessments should determine their language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Based on these assessments, learners can be grouped according to their needs, ensuring they receive the right level of support and challenge.

2. Integrated Language Skills Development
The programme should focus on developing the four core language skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—in an integrated manner. Each lesson could incorporate these skills through a range of activities and exercises, such as:

  • Listening and Speaking: Use interactive storytelling, songs, and role-play exercises to help students practice spoken language and comprehension. Encourage group discussions to build conversational skills and improve fluency.
  • Reading and Writing: Introduce age-appropriate texts, such as picture books, simple stories, and informational texts, followed by writing tasks that encourage students to summarize, respond to questions, and write short essays or letters. Use guided reading sessions to strengthen reading comprehension.

3. Cultural Sensitivity and Relevance
Understanding cultural backgrounds is key in an ESOL program. Tailor content to reflect students' diverse cultures, while also introducing aspects of English-speaking cultures, such as holidays, traditions, and global issues. This approach fosters respect for diversity and provides meaningful connections to the language being learned.

4. Interactive and Hands-On Learning

  • Visual Aids: Using visual aids, such as flashcards, charts, and pictures, to help students make connections between words and their meanings. These resources are especially beneficial for younger learners or beginners.
  • Technology Integration: Utilizing interactive language learning apps and online platforms, like Duolingo, Raz-Kids, or Kahoot!, to offer gamified learning opportunities that make language acquisition fun and motivating.
  • Real-World Contexts: Encouraging students to use English in real-life situations, like preparing presentations, writing letters, or organizing a simple school event is important. This practical approach gives students the confidence to apply their language skills outside the classroom.

5. Project-Based Learning (PBL)
PBL is an excellent method for ESOL learners at Iqra School because it promotes collaboration, problem-solving, and authentic language use. Students can work on projects related to topics of interest, such as creating a class newsletter, making a video, or producing a group presentation. These projects can involve research, writing, speaking, and listening—all crucial language skills—while fostering teamwork and creativity.

6. Supportive Classroom Environment
Creating an inclusive and supportive atmosphere where students feel comfortable making mistakes and learning at their own pace is important at Iqra School. This can be achieved by:

  • Peer Tutoring: Pairing more advanced learners with beginners can help foster a sense of community while allowing learners to practice speaking and listening in a less intimidating setting.
  • Small Group Work: Small group activities allow students to receive more individualized attention, encouraging participation and boosting confidence.
  • Clear Instructions: Teachers should use simple language, visual cues, and repetition to ensure all students understand what is being asked of them.
The teachers work with the students to cater the most effective ESOL programme to meet the needs of their students.
